Ion-Selective Electrodes Based on Neutral Carriers

Abstract

In ion-selective liquid-membrane electrodes, mobile ion-selective sites are interposed usually between a sample and reference solution, as shown schematically in Fig. 1.(1–3) Such electrode systems have been known for a long time(4) but have only recently come into wide use.(1.2,5–10) In the classical approach, the membrane consisted of an electrically charged ligand (ion exchanger) dissolved in a rather water-insoluble solvent, the solution being held by a preferably inert matrix.(5)
