Immunological Responsiveness and Aging Phenomena in Germfree Mice
Germfree animals constitute a unique resource for the evaluation of aging phenomena, especially as the latter relates to immune dysfunction. In particular, it is possible to eliminate one important variable, i.e., infection, in studies designed to define the relationship between the immune response and aging. Such infection may be overt or occult. Of perhaps greater importance, in the context of this discussion, is the fact that germfree animals may be utilized to perform experiments that are not possible with their conventional counterparts. For example, neonatal thymectomy in many strains of mice results in an acute, fatal runting phenomenon; this syndrome is not noted in neonatally thymectomized germfree animals of the same strains.
