Interface between the Behavioral and Cognitive-Developmental Approach to Research in Morality

Philosophers and social theorists in every period of recorded history have devoted much discussion to moral conduct, not only to what it is but to how parents and teachers might encourage or unintentionally interfere with its development in the young. In spite of the attention directed to morality throughout the ages, there was relatively little empirical investigation of this domain until this century. The landmark studies were those conducted by Hartshorne and May, Studies in the Nature of Character (1928, 1929, 1930), and by Piaget, The Moral Judgment of the Child (1932). These two classic studies represent quite contrasting theoretical points of view.
