Adolescence, Egocentrism, and Epistemological Loneliness

Previous research by this author and others (Chandler, 1972, 1973; Chandler & Greenspan, 1972), which can only be alluded to here, concerns the assessment and remedial training of various social and interpersonal skills in adolescents who, counter to normative expections, have failed to acquire certain habits of thought characteristic of formal-operational intelligence. The young persons typically used in these studies were children who had failed in their initial attempts to conform to adult social expectations and had been labeled as delinquent or mentally ill. To gain some better understanding of these troubled children, the researchers made attempts to chart their progress along several lines of sociocognitive development, focusing particularly on the status of their efforts to differentiate themselves from and define themselves in relation to others.
