The most distinctive occupational consequence of technological progress in control is, of course, the increased use of the human controller as a monitor and supervisor rather than as a continuously active element within the system. The controller’s primary task, therefore, comprises the receiving of information about the process, making the broad decisions concerning its required control parameters, and communicating these requirements to the hardware which provides the moment-to-moment control, Additionally, the operator is concerned to detect, diagnose and correct any malfunction within the system; faults may originate in the plant itself or in the automatic control system. Subsidiary duties may be concerned with the recording or transmission of data, with minor maintenance, or with tasks not directly connected with the control of the process.
