Past: Aims and Objectives
Before I start to say something about the functions and aims of collections of plants in the past, I should point out that almost all of the oldest and remaining collections are maintained by universities and related teaching institutions. So, if I tend to refer to the situation in the Netherlands and in Leiden in particular, I must beg you not to interpret this as pure chauvinism but more as a historical necessity and of course, as a result of the fact that my work is in Leiden.
