Abstract

Mr Henderson (Edinburgh) stated that botanic gardens deal with research, education and amenity. Five to ten million people probably visit the gardens of Europe annually, and a challenge to such gardens is to make collections more interesting and intelligible and to compete with zoos and museums with good displays. A high proportion of visitors had some idea that scientific research was carried out in botanic gardens, although most visited gardens for relaxation and tranquillity.
