The Role of Viruses in the Pathogenesis of Demyelinative Disorder
Encephalitis is not infrequently a sequel to measles and other paramyxovirus infections. Almost a quarter of such cases of post-infectious encephalomyelitis followed for 18 years by van Bogaert were a prelude to relapsing neurological disease and were diagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). This is surprisingly similar to the proportion of animals with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) that develop relapsing signs. Recently, Wisniewski et al. and Raine et al. have shown that the neuropathology of these animals is strikingly similar to that of MS.
