Abstract

The observation of Hayflick and Moorhead in 1961 that human diploid cells have a limited replicative in vitro life span (clonal senescence) (1) has been confirmed in many laboratories throughout the world. In addition to their predictable proliferative behavior, they are remarkably resistant to spontaneous or induced transformation to immortal cell lines.
