Mitochondrial Genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract

New methods of screening for mitochondrial mutants in yeast have given fresh impetus to the developing field of mitochondrial genetics. The immediate aim in this area is to arrive at as complete a picture as possible of the genetic content of mitochondrial DNA in terms of the number of genes and the identity of their products. Because of the small genome size, there is good reason to think that these are realistic goals, achievable within the next few years. A detailed map of mitochondrial DNA will at once define the extent of autonomy of the organelle and perhaps reveal new organizational and regulatory features in a eukaryotic genome.
