Abstract

From July, 1972 through May, 1975, the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) operated an experimental biomedical computer-assisted instruction network. This network, perhaps the first of its kind, connected three university data bases through a commercial time-sharing network to as many as 100 institutional users providing, at its peak, up to 3000 terminal connect hours per month. Information from and about the network has appeared in the literature: four papers by LHNCBC staff members (Lewis and Wooster, 1973; Wooster, 1973; Wooster and Lewis, 1973, 1974); two outside evaluations published as technical reports (Wakefield et al., 1973; Rubin et al., 1975), and as a journal article (Wakefield, 1973); and four special reports (Brigham, 1973a, b; Brigham et al., 1972; Kronick and Robinson, 1974). This paper attempts to fill a remaining lacuna — an administrative history of the network.
