Planning for Educational Communication Networks

After a relatively disappointing start during the decade of the 1960s, computers have finally begun to play an important role in education in many disciplines. Networks have been important in encouraging the use of computers. Single-host configurations, such as the Dartmouth and PLATO systems, have served local and sometimes even remote users. Groups of colleges and universities have combined resources in several local or regional networks, such as the New England Computer Network, the Triangle University Computer Center (North Carolina), and the California State Universities and Colleges. In medical education, the National Library of Medicine had almost too much success in sponsoring such a network on a national scale to link medical institutions with the computers at the University of Illinois Medical College, Ohio State University, and Massachusetts General Hospital. As a result, and due to the keen interest generated by this experiment, the Health Education Network was formed; it is described in Chapters 7 and 11 of this book.
