History will undoubtedly record that the development of the digital computer marked a major turning point in the stormy course of human welfare; whether for better or worse is not yet settled. Over the past 25 years the computer and its attendant technology have, in any case, become the basis, if not the cause, for some rather remarkable changes in our intellectual environment. Perhaps the most important of these changes has been the opportunity for the human mind to express itself in a new medium and to experiment with new and novel ideas. And, even if the development has had no other effect, the computer has certainly expanded our concept of what a machine is, or more accurately, what a machine can do.
