The adrenogenital syndrome is a genetically transmitted defect which expresses itself as a hormonal malfunction of the adrenal cortices, from fetal life onward. The adrenal cortices fail to synthesize Cortisol and instead release into the bloodstream a precursor hormone that is androgenic. Females with the syndrome are born hermaphroditic.
