Abstract

Most biologic processes are the composite of both environmental and genetic determinants. Environmental influences on longevity range from the suddenness of an automobile accident to the subtle influences of cigarette smoking. In contrast to the relative clarity of some environmental factors, the genetic basis for aging is both complex and poorly understood. The existence of a genetic basis for aging and longevity, however, is incontrovertible.
