Manipulation of Superalloy Microstructures and Properties by Advanced Processing Techniques

The degree of microstructural and property control now attainable in superalloys is quite remarkable. The principal developments in the coupled areas of alloy design and advanced processing are reviewed. In the area of directional-solidification processing, the relative advantages of oriented single-crystal growth, as opposed to textured columnar grain growth, are discussed. Recent developments in superalloy-powder processing, including problems and solutions in the areas of consolidation and forming are described. Some of the metallurgy associated with the fabrication of a totally disappearing diffusion-bonded joint is discussed.
