Abstract

The theory for the control of grain size and shape of heterogeneous alloys by thermal and mechanical treatment is described. The amount, size, and distribution of particles, coherency with the matrix phase, and interaction with dislocations determine the defect structure of the alloy. Recrystallization of supersaturated solid solutions will produce a variety of microstructures depending on the order in which recrystallization or precipitation occur. Thermomechanical treatments are described for producing the microduplex structure in heterogeneous alloys.
