Elementary Excitations in Very Thin Superfluid 4He Films

We present high precision measurements of third sound velocity in 4He films between 0.1 K and 1.5 K for superfluid surface densities between .16 atomic layers and 5.25 atomic layers. By reformulating Landau’s quantum hydrodynamics using only the area density we have been able to use these measurements to describe an elementary excitation spectrum and to add a surface roton branch.
