Abstract
Measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility of super-fluid 3He played an important role in establishing the identity of the A and B phases. The B-phase susceptibility has continued to be of interest, both because of the unresolved discrepancy between static and NMR measurements, and also because, based on the existing (weak-coupling) theory, it appeared that measurements of χB(T) could be inverted to obtain both the energy gap Δ(T) and the unknown Landau parameter F a2 . In this paper we will report the results of a strong-coupling calculation of the magnetic susceptibility of superfluid 3He, including all corrections through first order in TC/TF. In particular, we will discuss the implications of our strong-coupling theory for the possibility of extracting Δ(T) and F a2 from the measured susceptibility.
