Control of Body Temperature: Relationships with Metabolic Control

The mechanisms for control of body temperature are extremely efficient, but derangements in sensitivity of the central “thermostat” or alterations in the “setpoint” are frequently associated with disease. Elevation of body temperature is such a sensitive and reliable indication of the presence of a disease that thermometry is one of the most common and frequent measurements taken in hospitalized patients.
