Basic Science Enrichment Courses for Minority Medical Students

As one examines the figures reflecting minority representation in medicine, dentistry, law, science, engineering, and the related professions, one is struck by the obvious exclusion of minorities from these areas. In medicine, for example, if we were to achieve the national average of 600/1 patient-to-physician ratio, we should have at least 40,000 black physicians instead of some 6,000 now listed in the National Medical Association (NMA) rolls. Figures for the number of Chicano and American Indian physicians are so small that they are statistically insignificant. For the present population of Chicanos, we should have at least 20,000 physicians to reach the 600/1 ratio.
