Methodology and Strategies in the Laboratory

Abstract

The investigation of chemocommunication in mammals demands a flexible methodology and, more importantly, attention to relevant biological problems, such as the nature of chemosignals, reactions to signals, biological attributes of the organism, physiological processes, ecological influences, and the relationship of chemocommunication to genetic fitness. Laboratory techniques can isolate and identify parameters of the signaling system, but the full understanding of chemocommunication will only follow combined laboratory and field investigations. Special emphasis should be given to the integration of various signaling systems within the ecological and genetic constraints of the organism.
