Oxidation Behaviour of Zirconium Nitride in Oxygen

Abstract

The oxidation of 250 μ thick ZrN0.93 plates at temperatures in the range 625–800°C over the pressure range 10–730 torr, and of 60 μ diameter ZrN0.84 spheres at slightly lower temperatures (600–725°C) over the same pressure range, obey pressure dependent sigmoïdal kinetics. The reaction products consist of monoclinic zirconia accompanied with variable amounts of cubic or tetragonal zirconia. The experimental rate laws and the morphological observations suggest a transformation governed by a phase boundary reaction, the controlling process being the external interfacial reaction.
