Physical Complications of Alcohol Excess — Metabolism of Alcohol

  • D. Owens

Alcohols axe normally produced in small amounts by the bacteria of the small intestine. This presumably explains why the liver is capable of metabolising such substances, (Krebs and Perkins 1970). In individuals consuming large amounts of alcoholic beverages it has been estimated that the liver is capable of oxidising about 100 grams of alcohol, mainly in the form of ethanol, in 24 hours, (Sherlock 1968).
