Morphology of Membrane Systems in Pancreatic Islets

  • Chapter
Book cover The Diabetic Pancreas

Abstract

In the last few years, membrane systems have been identified as key effectors in cell function. In parallel with this awareness of the importance of membranes, much effort has been spent to gain a detailed knowledge of their structure in a great variety of cells. It is the purpose of this chapter to review the evidence accumulated up to now concerning the ultrastructure of intracellular and plasma membranes in pancreatic islet cells. The normal architecture of the membrane will be reviewed first, followed by the alterations of this structure during normal or pathological functioning of the islet cells. An earlier review of the subject has been published.1
