Abstract

The functions of the integrated gas transport system are to ensure that O2 supply to tissue be in accord with metabolic demand, and that absorption of the CO2 thereby produced serve to maintain tissue pCO2 and pH within given ranges. Any perturbation of a system property that works against the fulfillment of these requirements may be regarded as a disturbance of transport system function.
