Pain Control as a Multidisciplinary Problem

  • Austin H. Kutscher

Although today’s section meeting is focused on the control of pain, under a subsection designation of “dentistry,” the topic of pain control is obviously one which transcends the limitations of a specific discipline. Surely head and neck pain from all causes, with our without mouth pain, can be classified as a multidisciplinary problem. If pain is to be considered from the viewpoints of new therapeutic approaches and frontiers for immediate research, such avenues must be taken. The concept of pain control in the terminal patient, therefore, demands an overview approach and an overview conclusion, with the practitioner eschewing any temptation to follow a middle of the road path that can constrict clinical or research goals because of unproductive tunnel vision.
