Food and Socioeconomic Development

Abstract

Food and health are two inseparable fundamental biological principles on which the evolution and progress of mankind are partially based. Health is the final consequence of many interrelated and interdependent physical, biological, and sociocultural factors, among which food and, therefore, nutrition is one of the most important (1). Furthermore, the timing between food and age is of critical importance to insure full development of the genetic potential and to maintain good health (2). Quantity and quality of nutrients in early life have a direct effect on physical growth, biochemical maturation, body composition, physical fitness, work capacity, possibly mental development, and, of course, morbidity and mortality (2, 4, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20). However, in spite of the amount of work, knowledge, and progress made, there is no specific answer yet as to what is the best food for the right age to obtain and maintain perfect health.
