The process of dynamic psychotherapy has been described as being similar to the peeling of an onion. Removing one layer only uncovers another as the process of searching out and understanding progresses. The treatment approaches mentioned thus far indicate a situation in which the metaphor is extended. Here the therapist and the patient must dig up the onion, brush off the soil that distorts its shape, and establish that the onion exists as an entity apart from its surroundings. All of this preparation must occur before the mutual work of carefully uncovering each layer of the personality begins.
