For almost a year now, Beverly Kisonak has lived by the rhythm of a door that opens and closes. If the door to her husband’s bedroom is open, it means that Richard is feeling well, that he’ll be up and about, wanting to talk and share the day with her. If it’s shut, it’s his signal that he’s having one of his bad days, that he feels a sharper tug than usual from the rare and fatal disease that is pulling him down.
