Measuring Global Well-Being

Abstract

The preceding chapter discussed life concerns, “domains” of life and “criteria” for evaluating life. Although the domains and criteria that we chose to investigate were all relatively broad in scope, each referred to an aspect of life that was substantially less inclusive than life-as-a-whole. In contrast, this chapter focuses on a wide range of “global” measures, measures intended to tap a variety of different qualities that characterize life-as-a-whole. It describes sixty-eight global measures and how they relate to one another, both conceptually and statistically.
