Abstract

A feature of human activity frequently stressed by environmentalists is the “compression” of the time scale of such activity in recent history. Man evolved from a tool-making hominid to his present state in approximately 3 million years. The development of agriculture and consequent urbanisation commenced a mere 12000 years ago, the industrial revolution is barely 250 years old and we are now in an era of rapid population growth and increasing pressures on renewable and non-renewable resources.
