The contemplation of death in the 20th century can tell us a good deal about what is right and what is wrong with modern medicine. At the beginning of the century death came to about 15 percent of all newborn babies in their first year and to perhaps another 15 percent before adolescence. Nowadays fewer than 2 percent die in their first year and the great majority will live to be over 70.
