Abstract

In his now-classic piece, “Ethics and Clinical Research,” Dr. Henry K. Beecher introduces the problem of human experimentation by citing twenty-two examples of unethical or questionably ethical studies with human subjects. Although Dr. Beecher affirms his belief in the soundness of American medicine, he contends that unless steps are taken to correct activities of the sort he has noted, great harm will be done to medicine in the United States.
