Hydrodynamic and Optical Viewpoint on Particle Beams

  • J. D. Lawson

A particle beam may be thought of as a drifting hot with finite temperature and pressure or as a bundle of optical rays whose collective properties are expressed in terms of the Liouville invariant emittance; the physical meaning of the paraxial envelope equation including self fields will be discussed from both points of view.
