Nonuniform Energy Concentration in Focused Plasmas

Abstract

The dynamics of the dense plasma column (~ 1020 particles/cm3) produced in a deuterium plasma focus experiment is studied by the emission spectrum from hard x-rays to infrared and microwaves. A maximum of space and time resolution shows energy lumping within time and space intervals Δτ ~ 1 – 5 ns Δℓ ~ 0.1–0.5 mm. This energy granulation involves a fraction ~ 10% of the energy of the whole system and occurs by localized conversion of magnetic field energy into particle energy. The non-thermal distribution of ions and electrons as it is derived from radiation anisotropy and polarization, fits the observed beaming of electrons and ions that is observed by other methods (including anisotropy measurements of the neutron emission).
