Some Reflections on Philosophy of Science

  • Wolfgang Yourgrau

Abstract

During the last 50 years or so, European and American universities (and those in Japan) have introduced two new disciplines that did not exist before. Granted, however, there have always been academicians interested in these fields: the history and philosophy of science. In some universities and colleges the history of science was sharply distinguished from the so-called philosophy of science, and today almost all academic institutions in this country and abroad offer courses in both subjects. These courses either are organized in autonomous, independent departments or are very often attached to existing scientific or humanistic departments.
