Is the Coarse-Grained Entropy of Classical Statistical Mechanics an Anthropomorphism?

I am delighted that the editors of this volume are violating the injunction “Fest no Schriften” issued in a recent letter published in Science. As a former student of Professor Margenau, I am glad to have this opportunity to join in a tribute to him. In his course on the foundations of physics at Yale, I came to appreciate that classical statistical mechanics contains some important lessons for the philosophy of physics despite the physical inadequacies of that prequantum theory. The present paper is intended to argue for what I believe to be a philosophical moral of the status of the coarse-grained entropy of classical statistical mechanics.
