Particulate and Solubilized Hepatic Receptors for Glucagon, Insulin, Secretin and Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide

The chemistry and physiological target cells of glucagon, secretin and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were discussed. The characteristics of the interaction of glucagon with its receptor—adenylate cyclase complex in particulate liver plasma membrane (PM) were reviewed; a hypothetical model of this interaction was presented, based upon the Fluid Mosaic Model of Singer and Nicholson. This review established the need to solubilize the glucagon receptor—adenylate cyclase complex in order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of such interactions.
