Abstract
If we examine the list of diseases currently thought to be due to a lack of fiber in the diet (Table 1) then the reasons for this conference are readily apparent. The list includes carcinoma of the large bowel, today probably the commonest cancer in the world, and ischemic heart disease which claims as many lives in the West as do all types of cancer combined.
