Relationship Between Chemical Structure and Flammability Resistance of Polyurethanes

  • Chapter
Flame-Retardant Polymeric Materials

Abstract

Many techniques have been utilized to impart flame retardancy into polyurethane foams. These include the use of polyols and polyisocyanates that contain halogen and phosphorus atoms, as well as the use of additives containing various elements, including halogens and phosphorus. For a number of reasons, including cost, compatability, and ease of handling or processing, early work with polyester-based rigid urethane foams was based on additives, using inert organic compounds containing these elements, as well as inorganic compounds such as diammonium phosphate. Large quantities of such flame retardants are in use today and halogenated phos phate esters, in particular, have been shown to be very effective in reducing the flammability of urethane foams. However, the low degree of permanency and significant reduction in the physical properties of these foams made it imperative to develop other and more effective techniques.
