Polychloroheteroaromatic Compounds

Abstract

In writing this chapter we have attempted to show that polychloro-heteroaromatic compounds are more readily available than most heterocyclic textbooks lead one to believe. Some coverage of individual systems is to be found in the usual specialized reviews of heterocyclic chemistry and reference will be made to the existing reviews where appropriate. Research in this field is not a recent fashion. The chemistry of 2,3,4,5-tetrachloropyrrole, for example, dates back to 1837 and that of pentachloropyridine probably to Kekulé’s time. However, the industrial importance of cyanuric chloride (trichloro-s-triazine) and the discovery that many polychloroheteroaromatic compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activity, and are useful, therefore, as herbicides, pesticides, etc., restimulated interest in these compounds. This has been encouraged also by the development of newer synthetic methods which have made compounds such as pentachloropyridine potentially available on an industrial scale; the use of polychloroheterocycles in the synthesis of the corresponding polyfluorocompounds has also played an important role.
