A Review of Ion Simulation of High Temperature Neutron Damage and Void Formation

  • G. L. Kulcinski

The use of beams of charged particles to simulate high temperature neutron damage is only four years old. This technique was introduced in 1969 by Nelson and Mazey (1) and it was clearly aimed at obtaining information on the behavior of cladding material for i fast reactors. Since that time, over 60 papers have been published in the open literature and at conferences (2–6) in addition to countless internal company reports. The nature of the studies have ranged from purely theoretical to quite empirical with some countries actually using the experimental programs to guide the design of multi-million dollar fast reactors.
