Perception of mechanical vibrations: hearing
According to Sherrington’s classification the auditory apparatus belongs to the class of mechanoreceptors. It is a system specialized to receive mechanical vibrations between 16 and 20,000 Hz (hertz = cycles per second). The information processing of the auditory apparatus resembles that of the visual system in many ways.
