The main message of this book is to show how electrochemistry can be utilized to help in solving problems connected with the disturbance of the balance of nature caused by present transportation and industrial methods. It is suggested that, through the availability of abundant, low-cost electricity, and the introduction of the hydrogen economy, electrochemical technology will become a major way for the production of goods; the recycling of metals; the handling of transportation; avoidance, measure, and cleaning up of pollution, etc. In the present chapter, one has to introduce electrochemical technology as it exists today; to show its applicability to a variety of products; and the possibilities for future developments, including the avoidance of pollutional problems through the use of electrochemical techniques. Few details will be described; the interested reader is referred to the books given in the reading list for more comprehensive descriptions and technical details.
