Abstract

More than four hundred years ago the famous natural scientist and physician Theophrastus Paracelsus said: “Alle Dinge sind Gift und nichts ist ohne Gift. Nur die Dosis macht’s, dass ein Ding kein Gift sei.” These words for the first time clearly stated that the biological effect (E) of a substance depends quantitatively on the dose (D) administered, i.e.,
