Luminescence of Isoelectronic Mn4+ and Cr3+ Ions in Magnesium Orthotitanate
Powder samples of Mg2TiO4:Cr3+ and Mg2TiO4:Mn4+ with activator concentrations from 0.01 to 1.5% have heen prepared hy annealing of MgO/TiO2-mixtures. Both phosphors behave similarly and show very sharp emission lines. The most substantial of these lines is not generated by single ions but by so-called N-centers. The emission spectra vary with annealing temperature as is found both in powder and single crystal samples, thus showing that the N-centers might be activator ions associated with lattice defects.
