Dye Lasers: Recent Advances in Tunable Systems

Abstract

The laser-pumped dye laser comes close to being an ideal laser. It is efficient (better than 40% of the optical pump power can be obtained from the dye laser), tunable over a broad range, can be operated in a single mode without undue difficulty, and it can be quite accurately described in terms of a simple model. In this paper we review the operating characteristics of current continuous dye lasers, and we discuss techniques for tuning and controlling the bandwidths of these lasers.
