Abstract

As so frequently happens in the theory and practice of medicine the practical results of research into the mechanisms of formation and action of interferon have lagged far behind those of research in other directions and, in particular, into the use of interferon for the prevention and treatment of virus infections. Nevertheless the material which has now been obtained shows that interferon is a unique and universal substance acting against many viruses. Moreover it has been shown to be harmless both in its direct action on the body and in its freedom from late side effects of the allergic type.
