Influence of Some Neurotropic Drugs on the Hypothalamo—Pituitary—Adrenal System after Dexamethasone Blockade

Interest in the mechanisms of neural control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system has not declined. The virtual absence of nervous connections between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary prompted the assumption that humoral mechanism would be responsible for the increased ACTH secretion observed after stress. A transmitter substance originating in the hypothalamus and released into the portal vessels of the pituitary (Harris 1955) could act directly and in a relatively high concentration on the anterior pituitary cells.
